For our next adventure in Nova Scotia we headed to the South Shore, a region known for its historic towns, beautiful beaches and coastline, and delicious seafood! We spent three days exploring four different areas ⬇️
🦞 Peggy's Cove
The Peggy's Cove Lighthouse is said to be the most popular in Nova Scotia and one of the most photographed in Canada. To beat the crowds we headed here for sunrise, which was a GREAT decision! Hundreds of people were dropped off by tour busses just hours later. While the lighthouse is beautiful, we especially loved walking around the tiny fishing village, which reminded us a lot of Newfoundland! Make sure to stop at @holymackerelstore to buy some local goodies and get a lobster roll at @tomslobstershack!
💒 Mahone Bay
Mahone Bay was such a pleasant surprise! The town is known for its three churches that sit side by side along the waterfront, plus colorful buildings and local shops. We enjoyed some of the BEST pumpkin spice lattes and pumpkin donuts from @the_barn_coffeehouse and also got to learn about pewter at @amospewter, which was super interesting!
⚓ Lunenburg
Lunenburg is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is considered to be the best surviving planned British colonial town in North America, with 70% of its original colonial buildings remaining! We loved wandering around the colorful streets, checking out the Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic, and grabbing some food at @lightshipbrewing (who are @harvesthosts!).
🌊 Kejimkujik National Park
Kejimkujik (or Keji for short) is one of three National Parks in Nova Scotia. The park is home to both an inland unit (which will be in our next video) and a seaside unit. We headed to the seaside unit to hike the Harbour Rocks trail, where we hiked to a handful of stunning coves, with white sand and bright blue, clear water, plus saw tons of seals!

We made it to Halifax, the largest city and capita

We made it to Halifax, the largest city and capital of Nova Scotia!
Halifax is a beautiful waterfront city that is loaded with history, kind of reminding us of a smaller Boston. We unfortunately only had one full day to explore, but we managed to squeeze in as many of the city’s top sights and delicious local eats as we could. And we LOVED it!
To see our full day in the city, check out today's video 🎥, but here's a quick rundown of what we did!
◾️ Grabbed some delicious flat whites from @weirdharbour
◾️ Wandered around downtown Halifax, which is full of historic buildings!
◾️ Explored the Halifax Waterfront and all of its fun, interactive elements, plus unique sculptures.
◾️ Checked out the Halifax Citadel National Historic Site, a fort right in the city! We got to experience their noon cannon as well. (Note: drones are not allowed in the Citadel. We flew ours outside of its property)
◾️ Tried our first donair, the official food of Halifax! We went to @tonysdonair and it was 💯
◾️ Explored the Halifax Public Gardens, a beautiful, FREE Victorian style garden right in the city.
◾️ Enjoyed an insanely delicious dinner + dessert (sticky toffee pudding 🤤 ) at @thenarrowshalifaxpub
◾️ Went to a @hfx_mooseheads hockey game, our first ever Canadian hockey game. 🏒 It was SO much fun!

One of the top spots we wanted to visit on Cape Br

One of the top spots we wanted to visit on Cape Breton Island was Meat Cove. Located about a 35 minute detour off the Cabot Trail, this is the most northern community in Nova Scotia and got its name because the area was a popular spot for hunters during its early history.
And with epic cliffs, golden mountainsides, and blue water (with even a waterfall flowing into the ocean!), it was quite possibly the most jaw dropping spot we experienced on the island!
Being a more remote area, there isn't a ton to do, but what there is to do is WELL worth the trek to get to. Here you can walk to an overlook of Meat Cove, hike up Meat Cove mountain (which was VERY steep!), and enjoy some DELICIOUS chowder (+ other seafood items) at the Lawless Lobster. You can even camp overlooking the ocean at the Meat Cove campground!
PS: We had heard that the road to get to Meat Cove was treacherous, which made us a bit nervous. But we didn't find it bad at all! Yes, it's unpaved in some sections and has some potholes, but it's doable in any vehicle, in our opinion.

Tucked a little bit off the Cabot Trail lies Egypt

Tucked a little bit off the Cabot Trail lies Egypt Falls, a gorgeous multi-level, wide waterfall. And if you visit in the fall, you'll find it perfectly framed by golden trees. ✨ It is insanely picturesque!

There is a small parking area right by the trailhead. This is BEFORE what Google Maps says is the trailhead.
The trail is < 1.6 km/1 mile round trip, but it is steep. We saw a lot of reviews that said this hike was treacherous, but we didn't find it to be bad at all. There are some steps and an area with ropes, which we personally didn't need. Having good shoes (and maybe hiking poles) will help!
As you get closer to the falls, make sure to continue straight towards the Canadian flag. Don't turn left before this!
You can do this hike as a loop, but we just went the same way both there and back.

Mining has long been an important industry in Nova

Mining has long been an important industry in Nova Scotia and one of the most important minerals mined was and still is gypsum. At one point the province provided 6% of the world’s gypsum production!
Just outside of Chéticamp is an old gypsum mine that is now filled with turquoise water and surrounded by trees (which were sprinkled with yellows and reds during our visit 🍁). It's an easy walk from a parking area to the base of the lake, but to see its full beauty, make sure to climb up to the rocks above the lake! It's a short, but steep climb (with some ropes to help you) and is well worth a little extra effort to see the lake from above 😍

Welcome to Cape Breton Island, an island on the northeastern end of Nova Scotia known for its coastal scenery, highlands, Celtic and French heritage, outdoor adventure, and the Cabot Trail, a 298 km drive that is said to be one of the most scenic in the world.
Experiencing the Cabot Trail in the fall has been on our bucket list for years and for our one big fall adventure this year we spent 5 days checking out its different hikes, charming towns, local eats, waterfalls, and so much more. And it did not disappoint! With beautiful foliage and dramatic views, this is easily one of the best fall road trips in Canada 🇨🇦, if not all of North America! 😍

☕️ Exploring Chéticamp, an Acadian fishing village. We loved getting coffee at @boutiquemarguerite, the cutest cafe + shop!
🍁 Hiking the Acadian Trail, which had great foliage and views of the Cabot Trail, ocean, towns, and mountains
⛏ Seeing Gypsum Mine Lake
🥪 Devouring amazing sandwiches and a killer pumpkin spice latte at @dancing_goat
💦 Hiking to the gorgeous Egypt Falls
🎻 Attending the Baddeck Gathering Ceilidh for a fun night full of Cape Breton fiddle music!
