How to visit Vintgar Gorge in Slovenia: Everything to know!

With cliffside boardwalks, towering rock walls, turquoise pools, and waterfalls, wandering through Vintgar Gorge feels like something out of a fairytale. And out of the many incredible experiences we had during our two weeks in Slovenia, it was easily one of our biggest highlights!

But despite being one of the top things to do in Slovenia, Vintgar Gorge is not a spot you can simply arrive at and enjoy. There is quite a bit to know before you go! And in this guide we’re sharing all of the important details, including ticket information, the best time to go, how to get there, and what to expect along the trail.

About Vintgar Gorge

When to visit Vintgar Gorge

Vintgar Gorge is only open between April and October, due to icy and snowy conditions making the gorge unsafe during the winter. And within that timeframe, the opening hours vary by date.

When purchasing your tickets (more on that next!) you will have to choose a timeslot to enter the gorge. We highly recommend choosing one of the earliest timeslots. Despite having limited slots per time, Vintgar Gorge can get extremely busy as the day goes on. 

We entered at 7:30 AM and it was very quiet in the gorge, but got busier as we slowly moved through. It was still pretty easy to get photos without a ton of people in them at this time! However, when we exited the gorge around 10:30 AM, the line to get in was long and we can only imagine how packed the gorge felt. 

Another perk of going early is that the gorge is in the shade, which makes the lighting more consistent for photos. When the sun starts to poke into the gorge you’ll be battling a mix of shadows and bright spots.

Vintgar Gorge tickets

There is a fee to enter Vintgar Gorge, which is €15 for adults, €5 for children (3-15 years), and €3 for dogs. And not only do you need to pay to enter, but you also must choose a timeslot. As we mentioned above, try to get the earliest timeslot you can. The experience will be a much more enjoyable experience with less people in the gorge! 

Also, when choosing your timeslot, make sure to check the shuttle schedule and allot enough time to get there. Some of the shuttles do not run until after the first timeslot, which means you would need to get a later timeslot to ensure you get there at the right time.

Lastly, we suggest buying your ticket in advance. While you can buy a ticket at either shuttle stop, some timeslots sell out during the busy season. So to ensure you get the timeslot you’d like, make sure to plan ahead.

Getting to Vintgar Gorge

There is a paid parking lot right by the entrance to Vintgar Gorge, but it is pretty small and does fill up. Instead of driving to the gorge and parking here, we recommend utilizing their free shuttle service!

There are two different shuttle pickup locations: Central Parking and Bled Central Bus Station. Both shuttle stops are around a 10 minute shuttle ride to the Vintgar Gorge entrance. Dogs are allowed on the shuttles as well, but must be muzzled during the ride.

Here’s a quick breakdown of the two shuttle stops and which we’d recommend for your situation.

How much time do you need at Vintgar Gorge?

Vintgar Gorge itself isn’t very long, but if you’re like us, you will go very slowly as you admire the scenery and snap a bunch of photos. We spent about 1.5 hours just inside the gorge, but you could easily do it in an hour or less if you move quickly. But the gorge is just one part of the adventure! You will need about 3-4 hours for the full Vintgar Gorge experience, including the time in the gorge, plus hiking out of the gorge and taking the shuttle.

What to expect at Vintgar Gorge

Entering the gorge

As soon as you get dropped off at the Vintgar Gorge entrance, you will find the visitor center, a small cafe with coffee and treats, plus toilets. Make sure to utilize any of these services before you officially enter the gorge, as you cannot exit once inside.

When it’s time for you to enter the gorge, you will scan your QR code ticket at the gate, which will automatically open for you. It’s important to know that it will only open if it’s within your timeslot. So if you’re going to be late, you will need to change your timeslot, which you can do for €5 per ticket at the Visitor Center (by the entrance), assuming there are still slots available.

Once entering the gate you will be given a helmet to wear. You are required to wear this inside the gorge, due to the risk of rockfall. After putting your helmet on, you will then have a short walk until you’re in the heart of the gorge.

Inside the gorge

The hike inside the gorge is about 1.6 km (1 mile) long and is one way only. Which makes the experience so much nicer, as you don’t have to battle two way traffic. Along the way you’ll wind through the gorge as you walk across wooden boardwalks and bridges, with vibrant, blue water and a mix of calm sections, waterfalls, and rapids.

Each section of the gorge is gorgeous and we found ourselves stopping every minute to snap photos and admire the scenery. But one of the biggest surprises in the gorge were the fish! There were so many massive fish swimming throughout, with some calmer sections having at least two dozen. They were mesmerizing to watch!

Towards the end of the gorge the rock walls will widen a bit as you continue to walk along the river. Shortly after entering this section you will reach a dam, which has a waterfall rushing over it, before getting to the exit gates. Once exiting, you will return your helmet. There are also toilets here, plus a snack stand.

From here, you will need to choose the route you want to take out of the gorge. But before you do, make sure to go see Šum Waterfall, the largest river waterfall in Slovenia!

Hiking back to the entrance

Since Vintgar Gorge is a one way hike, you will take a trail to get back to the entrance, versus going through the gorge again. There are two different routes you can take: the River of Trees Trail or the King of Triglav Trail. 

The River of Trees Trail is the shorter option, at 4.3 km (2.7 miles) and is what we opted to take to save time. On this route you’ll have easy access to the Šum Waterfall and will wander through a picturesque valley with cows and mountain views (and a restaurant), before mostly hiking through the trees.

The King of Triglav Trail is a bit longer, at 5.5 km (3.4 miles), but offers more scenery along the way. On this route you’ll pass by Sveta Katarina, a picturesque church, plus have stunning views of the Karawanks, the mountains to the east of Bled. You can also hike back to Bled from here, so if you don’t want to use the shuttle, this is a good choice!

Is Vintgar Gorge worth it?

Being such a popular attraction, you may be wondering if Vintgar Gorge is worth visiting. And in our opinion, it 100% is! We loved walking through here and found it to be one of the most beautiful places we visited in Slovenia. Yes, it can be busy, but if you arrive early, you will have a much more positive experience.

But Vintgar Gorge isn’t the only gorge in Slovenia! If you’d rather have a less popular experience, check out Mostnica Gorge or Tolmin Gorge. Out of the two, Tolmin is the most similar to Vintgar.

Other things to do near Vintgar Gorge

Since Vintgar Gorge only takes a few hours to visit, you will likely have a good chunk of your day leftover afterwards! Vintgar Gorge pairs well with Lake Bled, which offers lots of fun things to do. Or you could explore the nearby Lake Bohinj, go for another nearby day hike, or continue your journey to some of the best stops in the Julian Alps!
