Discovery Point Trail | The BEST things to do at Crater Lake National Park in Oregon

Crater Lake
National Park

Crater Lake was born about 7,700 years ago when the massive Mount Mazama—once 12,000 feet tall—erupted and collapsed, leaving behind the deep, stunning lake we see today.

Long before that eruption, the Makalak people lived in the area, and they were present during the event. But Crater Lake stayed unknown to the outside world until 1853, when gold prospectors stumbled upon it.

In 1902, after tireless campaigning, Crater Lake became the 5th national park in the U.S. and Oregon’s only national park! Today, Crater Lake is famous for being the deepest lake in the country and its insane, vivid blue color. That’s because no rivers or streams flow into it—it’s filled only by rain and snow. With no sediment or minerals muddying the waters, it’s also one of the cleanest lakes on Earth!

Crater Lake At a Glance

From mid-May to October 31 it costs $30 per vehicle for 7 days. In the winter it’s only $20. Or FREE with the America the Beautiful Pass. However some areas of the park are free to visit.

Crater Lake National Park sits in Southern Oregon, far from any major cities. There are some great small towns nearby however! The closest airports are Eugene Airport (3.5 hours) which is a medium sized airport, with the larger, international airport being Portland International Airport (5 hours).

The best time to visit the park is from July to mid-September. This is when the trails are snow free, the park roads are fully open, and boat tours are running since the water is warm!

Reservations are not required to enter the park, however, boat tours should definitely be booked in advance if that is something you are interested in!
