Gateway Arch
National Park

The Gateway Arch isn’t just a shiny silver structure towering over St. Louis—it’s a powerful symbol of America’s westward expansion and St. Louis’ key role in it. Originally called the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial, the arch honors Thomas Jefferson, pioneers, and others who helped shape U.S. history.

It also commemorates important figures like Dred Scott, who sued for his freedom at the Old Courthouse; Virginia Minor, a women’s rights advocate; and Lewis and Clark, who began their famous expedition right here in St. Louis.

The Gateway Arch is seriously impressive—it’s the tallest monument in the U.S. at 630 feet, and it’s just as wide as it is tall! That’s 75 feet taller than the Washington Monument and nearly twice the height of the Statue of Liberty. In 2018, the site officially became Gateway Arch National Park. Between the rich history, jaw-dropping architecture, and fun things to do, it’s the perfect place to spend a half or full day exploring!

The park itself is free to visit, but if you want to do some of the activities, like the tram or the riverboat, there is an additional fee. If you have the America the Beautiful pass you will get a small discount.

Getting to Gateway Arch National Park is one of the easiest of all the US National Parks since it’s located right in the middle of a large city! Fly into the St. Louis Lambert International Airport and drive just 20 minutes!

Reservations are not required to enter the park, but if you wish to ride to the top of the arch, it is recommended that you book in advance.

Any time of the year is great for visiting Gateway Arch National Park. The winters can be a bit chilly, and the summer can be a little hot, but nothing too crazy!
