Stella Lake | Things to do in Great Basin National Park

Great basin
National Park

The Great Basin spans about 200,000 square miles across Nevada and parts of neighboring states. It’s a unique region where water doesn’t flow to the ocean but instead evaporates, seeps into the ground, or ends up in salty lakes. This area is characterized by long, flat valleys nestled between numerous mountain ranges.

Despite what you might expect from a desert landscape, Great Basin National Park is full of surprises! Here, you’ll discover diverse ecosystems, clear alpine lakes, rushing creeks, and even Nevada’s only remaining glacier. The park boasts the state’s second-highest peak, Wheeler Peak, and offers some of the darkest night skies in the country, perfect for stargazing. Don’t miss the vast Lehman Caves, a stunning underground world waiting to be explored.

Great Basin At a Glance

The park is located in eastern Nevada, right by the Utah border. While there are no major cities super close by, the park isn’t that far from both Las Vegas (4.5 hours) and Salt Lake City (4 hours).

Great Basin National Park is completely free to visit.

Reservations are not required to enter the park, but you should make reservations for the cave tour.

July through early October is the best time to visit in order to experience everything that the park has to offer.

Different Areas of the Park

There are six different areas of Great Basin National Park, Windy Peak, Lehman Caves, Wheeler Park, Kious Springs, Minerva Canyon and Arch Canyon. The majority of the most popular trails are located in the Windy Peak section. The caves in the Lehman Caves section is another popular area to visit.
