Located in Lark Harbour lies Bottle Cove, a rugged coastal area that boasts some of the best scenery in all of Newfoundland. Here you can see rocky mountains and cliffs, hidden coves, beautiful valleys, clear blue waters, and some of the best sunsets in the province.

During our 6 weeks in Newfoundland, Bottle Cove was easily one of our favorite spots we visited. And if you want to visit this picturesque spot for yourself, weâre sharing some of the best things to do in Bottle Cove, including quick hikes, local seafood, and the top scenic views!

Why trust us when planning a trip to Atlantic Canada?
We spent over 3 months traveling all around Atlantic Canada in our self-converted Sprinter van, visiting many of the popular sites, plus off the beaten path gems along the way. And instead of rushing through these areas like most people are forced to on vacation, we traveled slowly, allowing us to experience them more as locals. Because of this, we have tons of tips to help you plan your own Atlantic Canada adventure, whether it’s just for a week or for multiple months.
Where is Bottle Cove in Newfoundland?
Bottle Cove is located in Lark Harbour, a small coastal area about 1 hour northwest of Corner Brook, the largest city on the western side of Newfoundland. While many roadtrippers will stop in Corner Brook to reprovision, donât just stop there!
Located a bit off the beaten path, Bottle Cove requires a bit more time and effort to get to. But those who make the trek will be treated to a relatively undeveloped area full of dramatic coastal scenery. And despite being pretty well known, it doesnât feel nearly as busy as some of the other top places to visit in Newfoundland!
The best things to do in & near Bottle Cove

Lark Harbour, Bottle Cove, and the surrounding area offer an incredible mix of coastal, forest, and mountainous scenery, plus a pretty epic waterfall. Here are some of the best things to do in and near Bottle Cove!
Hang out at the beach

While Bottle Cove is best viewed from above (more on that soon!), if you want to visit the cove itself, head to the beach that lines it!
While you wonât find white sand and Caribbean waters here, it makes for a great spot to go for a picnic or take a dip on a hot day! And if you want to walk along the cove, we suggest going for a stroll on the short and easy boardwalk trail!
Hike the Cedar Cove Trail

One of our favorite experiences in Bottle Cove was hiking the Cedar Cove Trail, which takes you to Wild (Capelin) Cove.
After parking in this small parking lot, you will follow the trail for about 1.85 km (1.15 miles). Make sure to continue straight when the trail splits!
Along the way you will hike through the forest, pass by ocean trash that has been turned into art, and go alongside a beautiful valley, before ending at the cove. You can view the cove from above, where youâll be able to admire its clear waters and towering cliffs around it. But if you are up for it, we highly recommend going down to the rocky beach as well. Just be careful, it does require a climb down a pretty steep hill with loose dirt.
For an even more exciting adventure, add on the Little Port Lighthouse Trail. This hike is NOT for everyone though. It requires a very steep climb, using ropes to help you. We personally only did the Cedar Cove Trail and were happy with that choice. But we will say, the views from the ridgeline on the Little Port Lighthouse trail look extremely epic!
Enjoy fresh seafood
You canât visit the coast in Newfoundland and NOT get seafood! Being mostly undeveloped, Lark Harbour doesnât have a very large dining scene. But for a delicious meal, head to Myrtles on the Bay. This waterfront spot not only has amazing views, but also fresh mussels, chowder, fish and chips, and other seafood eats.
Hike the Southhead Lighthouse Trail
Another fun hike to do near Bottle Cove is the Southhead Lighthouse Trail. At about 7 km (4.3 miles) round trip, itâs a bit longer than some of the other hikes in the area, but offers a chance to see a more untouched area, less visited by tourists than Bottle Cove itself.
Along this hike youâll see coves and a waterfall, plus go through the forest, with tons of mountain and coastal scenery along the way.
Watch the sunset from Sunset Rock

Hands down the BEST thing to do in Bottle Cove and Lark Harbour is to watch the sunset from Sunset Rock. This is a rocky outcropping that overlooks Bottle Cove, from a higher vantage point than down in the cove. If youâve seen photos of Bottle Cove, this is likely where it was taken from!
To get to this spot, you can either take the boardwalk trail part of the way, before meeting up with this trail. Or you can park here for an even shorter journey.
We did find the trail to be a bit hard to follow at times (and steep, with steps and ropes), so make sure to download the offline AllTrails map so you can find your way. There are multiple different ways to go, so having the map is helpful to decide which option youâd like to take.

Along the trail there are two main overlooks, a higher spot that is a bit more rugged and difficult to get to, plus a lower level viewing area, which is more popular. Both overlook the cove, a green valley, the massive rocky mountains and cliffs, and you can even see a sea cave off in the distance.
But we highly recommend going to the higher up spot for sunset, as the views are even better from up there, plus you can see another cove to the north. Watching the sunset there was truly one of the (many) highlights of our time in Newfoundland. And itâs worth the trek to Bottle Cove just for this experience alone!
A+K Tip: Since you may be hiking back down in the dark, donât forget a headlamp!
Visit Blow Me Down Provincial Park
Blow Me Down Provincial Park is located in Lark Harbour, just 10 minutes from Bottle Cove. Here you can camp at one of the campsites they offer or hike the Tortoise Mountain Trail, which takes you to a short lookout tower, down steps to a beach, and to various viewpoints of the surrounding area.
Note: There is a $10 fee to visit this park.
Hike the Cape Blow Me Down Trail

Not to be confused with the Provincial Park with a similar name, the Cape Blow Me Down Trail is located about a 15 minute drive from Bottle Cove and Lark Harbour. And it is one of the best hikes in Newfoundland!
From the top, you have sweeping views of the Bay of Islands and Lark Harbour, plus mountain views to the south. You feel on top of the world from up here!
But views like this donât come easy. It is a difficult and steep hike at 7 km round trip (4.3 miles), gaining 609 meters (1,998 feet) along the way. However, you do have amazing views on the way up, so if you canât make it to the top, youâll still get to see much of the scenery.
See Copper Mine Falls

Last but not least, make sure to check out Copper Mine Falls! This short 0.64 km (0.4 miles) hike starts at the same trailhead as the Cape Blow Me Down Trail and leads you to an impressive waterfall. During our visit, Adam was brave enough to go for a quick dip, but be warnedâŚit is ICE cold!
How much time do you need to visit Bottle Cove?

While you could spend just a few hours at Bottle Cove, we think having 24 hours is ideal to experience the majority of what the area has to offer.
With 24 hours you could start off by hiking at Cape Blow Me Down Provincial Park. Then, you could grab lunch in Lark Harbour and hike the Cedar Cove or Southhead Lighthouse Trail, before ending with sunset at Sunset Rocks. Stay the night in Lark Harbour at one of the accommodations we mention below. And then end your time in the area by hiking the Cape Blow Me Down Trail and visiting Copper Mine Falls the next morning!
Where to stay near Bottle Cove and Lark Harbour

If you want to stay the night in Bottle Cove and Lark Harbour, here are a few options in the area!
Hotel: The only hotel option in the area is the Captain Cook B&B, which has both rooms for rent, plus cottages.
Vacation Rental: By far the coolest place to stay in Bottle Cove are the Bottle Cove Beach Domes and Eco Chalets. They offer both glamping domes, which have a comfortable bed, a bathroom, and an amazing patio. Plus a wooden chalet, which offers a kitchen, bathroom, grill, and even a washer and dryer!
Another amazing option is this oceanfront cabin, with amazing views of Bottle Cove!
Camping: Blow Me Down Provincial Park offers a handful of campsites for both tent campers and RVers. While no sites offer hookups, they do have a dump station and showers!
Boondocking: During our visit we stayed the night at the Cape Blow Me Down trailhead, which made starting the hike the next morning super easy! The parking lot can fit quite a few vehicles and there is one camping spot in the trees with a table. We did not have cell service here, so keep that in mind if you need it.
There are many great free and cheap camping spots in Newfoundland, we’ve listed our favorites on our sister site, Stoked to Camp!
