45+ delicious places to eat on Maui, Hawaii
Before we dive into our list of our top places to eat on Maui, there are a few important things to know!
- We are organizing this list of Maui restaurants by area, that way you can easily plan your own meals on the island.
- And while most places on this list are for breakfast, lunch, or dinner, we are also including some coffee shops and shave ice spots.
- As we mentioned, eating out on Maui is expensive. We’re including a mix of Maui restaurants across multiple price points, with most being fast casual spots or food trucks. Even though these tend to be on the more affordable end (by Maui standards), you should still expect to spend $15-$30 per person.
- Unfortunately some spots we have loved over the years have closed. So to give you even more ideas, we are also including some bonus places that we have yet to try, but have come highly recommended to us. As well as some spots we have heavily researched and almost gone to, but ran out of time for. We hope to visit all of these on our next trip to Maui!
North Shore & Central Maui
After arriving on Maui, Kahului, plus nearby Wailuku, will be the first areas you come across. This is where you can find the island’s Walmart, Costco, and other big box stores. So if you need a good spot to eat after landing at the airport or before your flight home, these are all solid choices! The restaurants in this area of Maui tend to be a bit more local, since they are further away from the big resorts in West and South Maui.
We’re also including Paia in this group, which is one of our favorite towns to walk around on the island. It’s also the gateway to the Road to Hana and we almost always grab a meal here after finishing the road trip.
Third Wave Coffee

For the perfect pick me up, head to First Wave Coffee! This coffee stand is located in a Lowe’s parking lot, but don’t let that deter you. They make great coffee, but are most known for their fun matcha lattes. Choosing which to get was tough, but we got their banana mac nut matcha and it was absolutely heavenly!
But beyond the delicious drinks, the guys running this stand were incredibly friendly! They seemed to know most locals that were ordering and even as tourists, they were extremely welcoming to us.
Catch them on a day they are closed (Sunday and Monday)? Akamai is another good stand in the nearby Home Depot parking lot, but we especially like their Kihei location, which we will cover below!
Tin Roof

One of the most popular restaurants in Kahului is Tin Roof! This walk up spot is owned by Chef Sheldon Simeon, who competed on Top Chef, and is known for its Hawaiian eats.
Some of the top things to try here are the pork belly, mochiko chicken, and garlic noodles. We personally ordered the mochiko chicken, with garlic noodles as the base. And it was fantastic! The chicken was nice and crispy and the noodles, which are more of a dry noodle, had a great garlic flavor.
Since Tin Roof does not have seating, you will need to eat in your vehicle. It’s also located minutes from the Kahului Airport, making it a good pre or post airport stop!
A+K Tip: There can sometimes be a line, so we suggest ordering online in advance!
Velzyland Burger Co.

After backpacking at Haleakala National Park we were in desperate need of a feast, so we headed to Velzyland Burger Co. in Wailuku. And it was not only one of the top three meals of our trip, but also one of the best burgers we have ever had!
Velzyland, which is named after a surf spot on Oahu, is most known for their smash burgers, which have homemade buns, burger sauce, melted cheese, and onions smashed into the patty. Even the non-onion lover among us (Kathryn) loved it! It was perfectly cheesy, juicy, and loaded with flavor.
Make sure to get their beef tallow fries and fresh pressed sugarcane juice as well! We got their lilikoi (passionfruit) version and it was so refreshing. The owner is also a really cool guy, which makes it even easier to love this spot.
Paia Fish Market

One Maui restaurant that we have visited on every single trip to the island is Paia Fish Market! Located in Paia (but with a South Maui location as well), this order at the counter spot is the perfect place to try fresh fish dishes. They have tacos, salads, and pasta dishes, but our favorite thing to get are their fish plates.
How the fish plates work is that you choose which fish you’d like, the preparation, and then your side. We are big fans of both the sauteed preparation (with garlic and lemon), as well as the blackened, cajun style.
Bonus places to eat on the North Shore & Central Maui
Since we tend to stay in West Maui or South Maui, we admittedly haven’t spent as much time in this area as we would’ve liked. And there are so many food spots on our to-do list for next time!
Below are some more places to eat in this area of Maui, most of which were recommended to us by locals!
- Sparky’s (Kahului): This is another good spot near the airport. They have a variety of dishes, like loco moco, pastele stew, and chicken katsu. On Fridays, they serve Hawaiian plate lunches, which is a great way to try some traditional Hawaiian foods.
- Sam Sato’s (Wailuku): This is a local spot that came very highly recommended to us. Their dry noodles are one of their must-try dishes!
- Tasty Crust Restaurant (Wailuku): This Hawaiian diner serves up breakfast favorites, like banana mac nut pancakes, plus traditional Hawaiian eats like loco moco.
- Tamura’s Market (Wailuku): This market is said to be one of the best spots on the island for poke!
- Four Sisters Bakery & Catering (Wailuku): This cash only spot is famous for their butter rolls. It sounds simple, but people swear it’s well worth the drive to try them. Their malasadas also look great!
- Flatbread Company (Paia): We have always wanted to try their kalua pork pizza!
- Mama’s Fish House (Paia): This is an iconic Maui restaurant for oceanside views and fresh fish. However, it is definitely a splurge! Make sure to make a reservation, as it’s extremely popular.
East Maui (Road to Hana)
The Road to Hana may mostly be known for its coastal scenery and waterfalls, but it also boasts some of our favorite places to eat on Maui! So as you embark on this scenic road trip, make sure to stop by at some of these spots for some delicious eats.
Aunty Sandy’s

The Road to Hana is famous for its banana bread and one of our top spots to try it is Aunty Sandy’s. Located on the Ke’anae Peninsula, one of our must-visit stops on the drive, this stand serves hot and fresh personal loaves of banana bread. In fact, it’s so fresh that you may have to wait 20 minutes or so for the next round to get out of the oven.
They do not have any seating, so we suggest going to one of the overlooks along the peninsula to enjoy your banana bread.
Coconut Glen’s

One of our most beloved food stops on Maui is Coconut Glen’s. We have been grabbing coconut milk ice cream here since 2014!
The owner Glen started by selling coconuts on the side of the road in the early 2000s, giving him the nickname Coconut Glen, which led to him opening an ice cream stand with coconut milk ice cream. Sadly Glen passed away a little over a year ago, but his legacy is living on!
Their menu of flavors is always changing, but we especially love the coconut flavor (which has chunks of coconut) and the lilikoi (passionfruit).
Hana Farms

Hana Farms Roadside Stand & Restaurant is the perfect spot to stop along the Road to Hana for lunch or a quick snack. It’s a stunning property, filled with so many plants and flowers, with both a restaurant and a roadside stand.
At the roadside stand you can find local fruits, snacks, and fresh, warm banana bread. We loved their pineapple banana bread! And at the restaurant, we recommend trying their pizza! We tried their ulu pesto pizza, which had a delicious fresh, herb flavor, with pieces of ulu on top. What is ulu you may ask? It is breadfruit, which is similar in taste and texture to potato.
However, as of writing this guide, it appears they changed the ulu pesto pizza to a pizza called “potesto,” which has potato instead of ulu. But considering the ulu tasted just like potato to us, we’re sure it’s just as delicious!
A+K Tip: Some people have stated that their order took a while to get, so don’t come in a hurry!
Órale Taco

For Mexican eats on the Road to Hana, stop by Órale Taco! We tried their garlic shrimp, fish, and steak tacos, which had some delicious sauces on top.
But our favorite item was the crunchwrap! Not only did it take us back to our childhood going to Taco Bell, but it also felt like the best value for the money. It’s loaded with your choice of meat, beans, cheese, rice, sauces, and a tostada.
We also highly recommend the ube horchata if they have it!
Bonus places to eat in East Maui
Despite its remote location and small size, there are shockingly quite a few great looking spots to eat near Hana. Here are some spots we’re eyeing for next time!
- Thai Food By Pranee: This Thai food truck is said to have amazing drunken noodles!
- Braddah Hutts BBQ Grill: This is a good spot to try some Hawaiian BBQ!
- Huli Huli Chicken: This spot focuses on chicken and ribs. It’s also right by Koki Beach, making it easy to have a beachside picnic.
South Maui
South Maui, which encompasses Kihei and Wailea, is home to some of the best places to stay on Maui and there are a lot of restaurants to choose from in this region. This is where we have personally tried the most Maui restaurants and we have quite the list of favorites!
Akamai Coffee

Our favorite coffee shop in Kihei is Akamai Coffee Co! Not only is the vibe of this spot really nice, but they also have delicious drinks. Especially if you want to try some sweeter, Hawaiian inspired ones!
Kihei Caffe

Kihei Caffe is one of the best Maui restaurants for breakfast! It has a no frills, colorful, local vibe with both traditional breakfast dishes and some with a Hawaiian twist. We have eaten here a couple times over the years and love their cinnamon rolls and French toast!
Kinaole Grill

One of our absolute favorite places to eat on Maui is Kinaole Grill! This food truck serves up some insane food. We personally loved their coconut shrimp and their ahi bombs (fried ahi). Both were super crispy on the outside and the fish itself was tender and fresh. Each dish comes with a sauce to dip it in, plus a side of rice and salad with a delicious dressing.
A+K Tip: Kinaole Grill is parked right up the street from Kamaole I and since there is no seating, we suggest taking it to the beach for a picnic.
Gus’ Hawaiian Shave Ice

Parked right behind Kinaole Grill is Gus’ Hawaiian Shave Ice, one of the best shave ice spots on Maui! This little blue and white VW bus has great traditional shave ice, with a variety of homemade flavors to choose from. But what really makes it stand out is the fruit shave! This is a block of frozen fruit (usually 2-3 fruits together), that is shaved just like traditional shave ice. But instead of plain ice with syrup on top, it’s just fruit!
The texture of the fruit shave is like a feathery pillow. Compared to regular shave ice, it’s even softer, has a more evenly distributed flavor, and also stays colder longer, since there’s no liquid added. In our opinion it’s even better than shave ice!
A+K Tip: When ordering shave ice, we highly recommend getting ice cream on the bottom and a snow cap (cream) on top!
Ululani’s Shave Ice

Another must-try shave ice spot on Maui is Ululani’s Hawaiian Shave Ice. They have multiple locations around the island, but we especially love their Kihei location. It gets very busy (so be patient!), but it’s some of the softest shave ice we have found on the island.
We like to switch it up and get different flavors each time, but some of our favorite combinations are the Lava Flow (strawberry, coconut, and pineapple) and Broke Da Mouth (pickled mango and li hing mui).
South Maui Fish Company

Tucked in a shopping center in Kihei, South Maui Fish Company is a trailer known for its fresh poke and huge fish tacos! Unlike many fish tacos we have had, where the fish is chopped up, these tacos have massive hunks of tender, grilled fish. It’s an insane amount of food! And while the fish is definitely the star, the tacos are dressed with a spicy aioli, slaw, and unagi drizzle that really ties it all together.
They are only open for lunch and then again for dinner, with a break in between. So make sure to check their hours! They also can sell out of poke, so arrive early to get some.
Kitoko

One of the coolest places to eat on Maui is South Maui Gardens. The gardens are filled with stunning plants, but the best part is that you can find a bunch of food trucks scattered throughout! It’s a fun place to not only walk around, but also grab dinner. We loved Kitoko’s twist on a loco moco with braised beef.
While here, make sure to go see Dozer the tortoise, right behind Kitoko! He has had quite the life in his 22 years, suffering from a dog attack when he was 2 years old and then surviving the Lahaina fire in 2023 with severe burns. Dozer has recovered and now calls the gardens home!
Coconuts Fish Cafe

Coconuts Fish Cafe is a great spot to eat for fish based dishes, plus even some items for the non-fish fans! When we came here on our second visit to Maui, it was our favorite meal of the trip. We really enjoy the fish tacos here, especially the coconut milk slaw and the mango on top. It gives it a very tropical taste!
Bonus places to eat in South Maui
While we have eaten at many of South Maui’s best restaurants, we still have a couple more we’re dying to try next time!
- Reef’s Real Fruit Ice Cream: Reef’s specializes in New Zealand style real fruit ice cream. This is where ice cream is mixed with real fruit in a special machine, turning it into this perfectly blended soft ice cream. It’s one of our favorite styles of ice cream! They offer both a dairy base and a coconut base, plus some tropical fruit, like mango, lilikoi, and dragon fruit.
- Nalu’s South Shore Grill: This restaurant is open all day and serves all meals, but we hear it’s one of the best places to eat on Maui for breakfast. Their corn flake crusted french toast, which is stuffed with pineapple-lilikoi cream and topped with tropical fruits looks insane!
West Maui
West Maui is probably our favorite area on the island! This region encompasses Lahaina, Kaanapali, Napili Bay, and Kapalua Bay. We have stayed in this area during every trip to Maui and love the beaches here. Plus it’s home to some of our favorite Maui restaurants!
Leoda’s Kitchen and Pie Shop

One of our staple places to eat on Maui is Leoda’s Kitchen and Pie Shop. Located along the drive west to Lahaina in an old plantation-style home, it’s easy to miss if you’re not paying attention. But it’s well worth the stop!
They are known for their mini pies, which come in a handful of flavors, like peanut butter pie, coconut pie, and banana cream pie, to name a few. But one of the stars of the show is their homemade bread, which you can enjoy in a variety of different sandwiches.
We used to always come here for breakfast (pictured above), which they no longer serve, so we will have to come back to try the sandwiches next time!
The Gazebo

Quite possibly the most famous breakfast spot on Maui is The Gazebo. Located in a gazebo overlooking Napili Bay, it is breakfast with a 5 star view! We love their macadamia nut pancakes with coconut syrup, plus their fried rice.
However, because of its popularity, it gets very busy. People line up well before they open to get seated in the first round of seating. So make sure to get there early! You can also order takeout starting at 8 AM and then go eat at the beach, which we hear is quicker.
Joey’s Kitchen

During our most recent trip to Maui, our favorite meal was from Joey’s Kitchen! Located right by Napili Bay, this spot specializes in Hawaiian-Filipino cuisine. We loved their crispy pork belly and their garlic chicken. Both were so crispy, despite being ordered as takeout and not eating them right away. And the flavors were off the charts! This is a meal we are still talking about months later. 😍
The Fish Market Maui

If you’re looking for poke in West Maui, head to The Fish Market Maui. This is part seafood market and also part restaurant, focusing on locally caught fish. During our visit, they had both a traditional ahi poke with a sesame based sauce and a blue marlin with a mayo sauce. Both were delicious! They also have tacos, coconut shrimp, and other seafood dishes if you’re not feeling poke.
Duke’s Beach House

One of our must-visit restaurants on the Hawaiian Islands is Duke’s! Their Maui location is located at the OUTRIGGER Honua Kai Resort & Spa (where we honeymooned!), overlooking the ocean. They serve all meals, have daily live music, plus have a Barefoot Bar in the evenings with a simpler menu. But the real reason we come here is for their Hula Pie!
This massive pie has macadamia nut ice cream, a chocolate cookie crust, hot fudge, toasted macadamia nuts, and whipped cream. While we try to not visit chain restaurants when traveling, we gladly make an exception for Duke’s so we can have a slice!
Waikomo Shave Ice

Another one of our favorite shave ice spots on Maui is Waikomo Shave Ice. Unfortunately, the Paia location we visited closed, but they have another location at the Hyatt resort in Kaanapali. What we love about their shave ice is that they have all natural syrups, which makes it taste a little less sweet and lets the fruit flavor shine through. They also top the shave ice with cream, fresh fruit, and some honey!
Bonus places to eat in West Maui
Despite spending so much time on this side of the island, our list of places to eat in West Maui is still long!
- Baya Bowls: This colorful truck makes some delicious looking acai bowls. And it’s right across from D.T. Fleming Beach Park.
- 808 Grindz Cafe: If you don’t want to wait for a seat at The Gazebo, head here! Their pancakes, especially the ube ones, look super tasty.
- Aloha Mixed Plate: This is a great spot to try some local Hawaiian dishes. Their Ali’i plate includes kalua pork, lau lau, lomi lomi salmon, and poi.
- Fish Tacos El Blue: Their fried fish tacos look delicious! It’s also right by Leoda’s if you want to get lunch here and then pie for dessert.
- Penny’s Ice Cream Parlor & Cafe: We really want to try their banana bread ice cream sundae and their banana iced latte.
- Papi’s Ohana: This spot is famous for their cinnamon rolls! Be prepared to wait in a long line.
Upcountry
Maui’s Upcountry, on the slopes of Haleakalā, is home to lots of local farms. Which means food is about as fresh as it can get here! Unfortunately we haven’t spent too much time in Upcountry, but our goal for our next visit to Maui is to spend a couple days here. And these restaurants, bakeries, and coffee shops are at the top of our list!
- Ulupalakua Ranch Store: For some of the freshest beef around, head straight to the source! This cattle ranch market sells burgers, which you can get with beef, elk or venison meat.
- Bully’s Burgers: This burger spot is run by Triple L Ranch and uses beef from their free-range, grass-fed cattle raised nearby.
- Kula Bistro: This is a beloved upcountry spot, with a menu featuring a wide variety of dishes. It has something for everyone!
- Upcountry Farmer’s Market: If you are on Maui on a Saturday, head here! You’ll be able to support many local farmers and businesses.
- Crema Maui: This coffee shop is located in an old trolley car!
- Komoda Store and Bakery: This bakery dates back to 1916 and is known for their malasadas, cream puffs, stick donuts, and butter rolls.
- Hali’imaile General Store: Despite its name, Hali’imaile is not a general store, but a higher end restaurant with fish dishes, curries, Hawaiian cuisine, and more. We hear their pineapple upside down cake is legendary! While you can walk-in, they prefer reservations.
